And no, that’s not a typo. The good folks at Oregon’s Steinfeld’s Sauerkraut once again announce their annual sauerkraut recipe contest, in an ongoing effort to promote the product as well as generate new ways to use it and, therefore, sell more. (Duh!) But if you’re thinking of entering, it might help to know what won last year. According to the company, “Last year's winners included a Scandinavian Spice Cake with Lemon-Cardamon Cream Cheese Frosting, Red Cabbage Cheesecake Appetizer, Tangy Shrimp Cocktail, and Cheddar and Poppy Seed Scones.” All included Steinfeld's Sauerkraut, Wine Kraut or Red Cabbage as an ingredient. (Which makes that cake with cream cheese frosting just a BIT less appetizing, eh?) Full details are available at SteinfeldSauerkraut.com, but we’ll cut to the chase, ‘cause that’s all you really want to know about: First prize is $1,000, a year’s supply of ‘kraut, and all the bragging rights you can muster up. Mmmmmm.
In the greatest amount of respect, the correct spelling is "whet" when you're using the phrase "whet your appitite".
