Amano Chocolate, that’s what. Say what? You never heard of it? Yeah, us neither, which probably explains why the company sent out a release noting “An increase in production capacity at Amano’s tiny factory puts this world-class chocolate within reach of chocolate-lovers nationwide.” They do go on (and on) about the high-quality cocoa-beans they use, and how their plant is 4,400 feet above sea level, which somehow “aid[s] the flavor development process.” (Again, we’re clueless.) But here’s the part that got a little stuck in our throat: The company’s Madagascar Premium Dark Chocolate is “available in 2-ounce bars (56g) at a suggested retail price of $6.00.” Which rounds up to $48 a pound! Or, we could stroll down the hall to that vending machine and grab a Hershey’s bar for less than a buck. For us, it’s no contest. Mmmmm, chocolate!
Have you tried their chocolate? (I have.) Amano's chocolate is absolutely incredible -- probably the best chocolate made in the U.S. today. Also, at 70%, a small square is much more satisfying than a whole Hershey's bar. That square has incredible flavor packed into it and it makes me sing "Damn that's good!" all day.
Also, Amano's price is not that out of the norm for fine chocolate. Amedei's prices (for example) are much higher -- as much as $12 - $13 for a 1.75oz bar. 1/8th less chocolate at almost twice the price. (IMHO, Amano's chocolate is on par taste-wise.)
I guess the best comparison would be a small glass of fine wine compared to a pint of rot-gut. Which would you rather have?
