Got word from the Thompson’s Water Seal folks (No relation to your Faithful Scribe, alas) who tell us they’ll be rolling out a new ad this summer showing how well their product waterproofs the decks around Niagara Falls. That’s pretty impressive in itself, but some digging into the press release uncovered this nugget: “The decks are disassembled every fall, and all the lumber is taken indoors. Otherwise, the weight of the ice would crush the wood over the winter. Then in the spring, the decks are rebuilt from scratch. And the crew often works in icy water up to their waists while putting the decks back up.” Remember that the next time you think your job is approaching intolerable; At least you don’t have to do it standing in waist-deep icy water.
